The Right to be Left Alone 03; Chip implants VeriChip
Since the approval of the VeriChip by the FDA in 2004, a chip implanted in the skin of a human for identification purposes, there has been a rise in the use and implementation of the chip worldwide. From a club in Spain using the chip as a “touchless payment” identifier to identifying emergency room patients medical records via the chip, the impact of this chip on the right to privacy has been history making. As this technology booms and the reasoning behind it becomes, “for one’s own good”, the laws governing the use and implementation of the chip are lagging behind especially when it comes to protection of privacy.
